I view theatre as a continuation
of philosophy by other means. Both are ways we seek to understand
our world and our place
in it.
Both deal with the cycles of human existence that play
out in seemingly tightening coils leading...where? To breakthrough?
To implosion?
Theatre
lets us explore complex philosophical issues not in esoteric thought,
but in flesh and blood, conflict and comedy.
As a playwright,
I seek to entertain
and enlighten – often by telling modern stories that use
historical events to elucidate issues that resonate today. My job
is to raise
questions, inspire discussion, provoke insight, not to provide
answers.
Though
a professional writer my entire working life (and a one-time actor
and director), I only recently began writing plays. So far, I’ve been
honored with playwriting fellowships from the Oregon
Arts Commission and Oregon
Literary Arts.
A
recent play won
the 2010 New by Northwest play competition sponsored by a Portland
theatre company and is a semifinalist for the
2010 National
Playwrights Conference at the
Eugene
O’Neill
Theater
Center and the 2010 Fratti-Newman
Political Play Contest sponsored
by Castillo
Theatre, New York. Another was a finalist for the
2008 Oregon Book Awards. I’m a member of the Dramatists Guild.
